Opus 4.8 adds more control over reasoning effort

Anthropic released Claude Opus 4.8 with reported improvements in coding, agentic tasks, and professional work. The announcement also introduces effort controls in the user interface and changes to Claude Code workflows.

Context

Not every request needs the same depth of deliberation. A small edit, a difficult bug, and an open research question justify different time budgets. Effort controls are useful when additional computation produces a visible improvement on the task at hand. More time spent is not itself evidence of a better outcome.
